Not fade away
Inspired by my favorite TV recaps over at the AV Club’s TV Club, I just watched a couple episodes from season 3 of The X-Files. I break my long LOST tumbling silence to note this experience for one reason:
I used to love The X-Files more than any other show. I dove into the lore. I watched it with great devotion. I have seen the great episodes 3, 4, 5 times or more… and yet, here we are, 15 years after season 3 debuted, and I can barely remember more than scattershot images, general plot lines, key characters, and the titles of some of my favorite episodes (“Jose Chung’s ‘From Outer Space,’” anyone?).
I think this means that as much as I love LOST, as much as I have devoted the past 6 years of my life to this show, one day a decade or so from now, I won’t remember every little detail like I do now. I won’t be able to recall who said what, what season X character died, and so on. This makes me sad.
However, this also means one day I will be able to watch the show all over again, and experience a strange bit of deja vu. I will begin to remember things, but they will still be a little fuzzy. I will begin to remember things, but they will be tangential to the show—like the first LOST Lunch, or this finale party or that random friends I watched it with that I never see anymore. This makes me happy.
